She missed last year's event with an injury as well

World Marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei is out of the 2023 London Marathon.

The two-time London Marathon winner lasted barely three minutes before limping off with what looked like an injury, one that she allegedly was trying to shake off in the race.

On Friday, the 2021 Olympics silver medalist revealed that she was wary of a nagging hamstring injury and the same took a toll on Sunday as she limped off barely a mile into the race.

Last year, she was forced to withdraw from the course with an injury also and chose to focus on treatment and a possible return to the course this year.

Kosgei set a world record time of 2:14:04 in Chicago in 2019.

Speaking to journalists after the athletes' press conference on Friday 21 April in London, Kosgei admitted to having dealt with a hamstring scare just weeks to the marathon but remained hopeful it would not affect the outcomes of her participation in the Sunday morning race but it was not meant to be.

“I am just from having a week’s rest after suffering a slight hamstring injury that came up some two weeks ago. All the way, my training was going good until two weeks ago when I developed a hamstring injury. I have since had to take a week off to recover and I feel good now," she said.

She was expected to challenge for the title alongside Olympics champion Peres Jepchirchir and defending champion Yalemzerf Yehualaw.
