
Team Kenya to Africa junior championships bags 33 medals

Team Kenya to the second edition of the African CAA Under-18 and Under-20 Championships held in Ndola, Zambia landed back in the country on Thursday 4 May, having won 12 gold medals.
Close to 50 athletes had travelled to Zambia for the competition and collectively, Kenya bagged 33 medals as the country finished in third place in both categories.
“While our target was to top the continent, we congratulate the youngsters for the impressive show. This is just but the beginning for them. I am proud of them and wish them all the best and look forward to also celebrate their achievements in future,” Athletics Kenya’s (AK) Barnaba Korir wrote as he welcomed the team home.
World Under-20 3000m bronze medalist Nancy Cherop, competing in the Under-18 category led the gold medal haul with an impressive display in all three races she started. She bagged the 1500m, 3000m and 800m titles in spectacular fashion.
Josphat Sang made sure that Kenya brought home a double in the 1500m distance in the Under-18 category as he dominated to bag gold as did World Under-20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot who was peerless in the men’s Under-20 1500m race.
Dennis Mutuku delivered the men’s Under-20 10,000m title as Edmond Serem bagged the boys’ 2000m steeplechase. World junior cross-country bronze medalist Pamela Kosgei and Emmanuel Wafula made sure that Kenya was on top of the podium in the Under-20 steeplechase as they bagged gold on both men and women’s categories.
Peninah Mutisya won the women’s 800m Under-20 title with Brian Kiptum completing the double for Kenya. Irene Jepkemboi delivered the only field gold for Kenya in the Under-20 javelin.
