Team Kenya due home after topping medal standings in Africa Athletics Championships

Kenya topped the medal standings for the second successive edition of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in this year's event held in Reduit, Mauritius.

Overall, Kenya collected 23 medals comprising 10 gold medals, five silver, and eight bronze to finish ahead of South Africa in the continent who had nine gold medals but an overall haul of 36.

Sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala delivered Kenya's gold in the 100m race for the first time in 32 years in a photo finish, edging out former title holder Akani Simbine after clocking 9.93 and further steered the 4x100m team to win their first-ever relay gold.

The team is set to jet back to the country on Monday morning where they are set to receive a heroes welcome.

Five athletes bagged gold on the final day of the competition as Samuel Gathimba and Emily Ngii won gold in the men's and women's walk race respectively.

YouTube athlete Julius Yego defended his title after throwing 79.62m to get the better of 2015 champion Egyptian Abdelrahman Ihab who clinched silver with a throw of 77.12m.

Abel Kipsang clocked 3:36.57 to clinch the men's 1500m title while Jarinter Mawia won the women's 800m in 2:02.80.
