Patrick Kipngeno’s bid for a third world championships victory, in the Uphill category, fell just a bit short, as he finished third in 39:20 as action got underway at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships ongoing in Spain.
Rémi Bonnet won the race in 37:50, finishing over a minute ahead of another Kenyan Richard Omaya Atuya who placed second in 39:04 in what was his first participation in the world championships, despite being a mainstay in the Mountain Running World Cup in the last two years.

Christian Allen sprinted in fourth at 39:28, and Jacob Adkin (U.K.) jumped one spot in the late stage to finish fifth in 39:34.
Two-time champion Kipngeno, was aiming for a third consecutive title, an especially difficult feat, as the race proved.
Bonnet came into the event with notable confidence, on a course that perfectly suited his vertical racing strengths.
He was already in the lead by a clear margin at the halfway control point. Chasing him were Atuya, and Kipngeno. In the end, Bonnet left no room for doubt and claimed the gold in 37:50, setting a new course record.
“I am very happy to win here. My training style, combining ski mountaineering with trail running, made me feel very confident. It’s never easy to beat the top Kenyan runners in an Uphill race, but today I managed to do it. I’m really pleased with my performance," Bonnet offered after his victory.
Silver medalist, Atuya, admitted that past the halfway point, Bonnet had opened a gap too big and he chose to focus on running his own race. "I'm happy with the excellent result achieved by our Kenyan team today," Atuya added.
Kipngeno, on his part, said "From around the second kilometer, I realized the dream of a third title wouldn’t be possible today. Remi and Richard were just too strong. As for the course, I really enjoyed it. I love these landscapes and the overall atmosphere.”
