Olympian Nelly Chepchirchir cruised to a win in the women’s 1000m race at the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday evening.
Chepchirchir, making her first appearance on the track since the Olympics, beat a strong field with a time of 2:31.24 to claim victory, setting a new world lead and meet record.
Mary Moraa, the world 800m champion and Olympic bronze medalist over the distance, finished third in 2:33.43 in the unfamiliar event, behind Great Britain's Jemma Reekie, who clocked 2:32.56.
Chepchirchir, who exited the Summer Games at the semifinals, had an outstanding performance, taking command of the race from the start.
In her first Diamond League appearance since May, the 21-year-old held off challenges from Reekie and Moraa in the final bend to cross the line first.
Meanwhile, Moraa will leave the meet with pride, having recorded a season-best in a race that is not her specialty.
Omanyala makes to the podium
Africa's fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, clocked 9.88 seconds to finish second in the men's 100m.
USA sprinter Fred Kerley won the race with a meet record of 9.87 seconds, narrowly edging out Omanyala in a photo finish.
Kerley’s victory marked his revenge on the Kenyan sprinter after their previous encounter at the 2022 Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, where Omanyala won despite a near false start.
Jamaican Ackeem Blake finished third with a personal best time of 9.89 seconds.
