2024 Kipkeino Classic 400m hurdles silver medalist Kipkorir Rotich has noted that training and competing alongside African Men’s 400m hurdles bronze medalist Wiseman Were has taught him invaluable lessons.
On Saturday 20 April at the Nyayo National Stadium, Rotich finished second behind Were in the fifth edition of the Kipkeino Classic. He clocked 50:39, while Were ran 48:57. Ngunjiri Edward finished on the podium in 50.84 seconds.
Rotich described training and competing against Were as a fulfilling experience. He expressed admiration for how the Commonwealth Games 4x400m relay bronze did his craft, noting that just watching him was motivation.
He pointed out that their shared experiences forged a bond rooted in mutual respect and a hunger for excellence. He has gained insights that have shaped him into a stronger competitor and better individual.
“He has taught me a lot because he trains well. He always encourages me to train well, do gym work, and build muscle. He is a good man who wishes the best for me,” he offered.
With the taste of victory still fresh, the 25-year-old will be hoping to grace the 23rd edition of the senior Africa Athletics Championships, slated for June 21–26 in Douala, Cameroon. He was optimistic about making the cut for team Kenya to the Paris Olympics.
“I did not expect the second position; I thank God. I am happy because the race was tough and I did not think I could make it. That is a big step. I plan to compete in senior Africa, and then after that, if I get a chance to compete in the Olympics, I will be glad,” he said.
His competitor, Were, was glad that things were working out for the better. He noted that the aim was progress over perfection. He has already secured his spot on the Kenyan team for the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas.
“Things are working well; we are building brick by brick. In early January, I said we were building and I was trusting the process. We still have to deliver. It is still early in the year and things will work out eventually,” we were offered.
