Exactly three weeks after his brutal murder, fresh details have emerged following investigations into the death of retired Kenyan marathoner Samson Kandie.
Kandie’s life was cut short by a brutal killing at his home. The 53-year-old was attacked by unknown assailants late on a Thursday 3 October night at his residence in Elgon View Estate, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed that they were treating the case as a murder. Kandie was hacked to death by individuals who appeared to have ambushed him at his home. He was laid to rest last weekend.
Kandie’s wife Rose Chepkemboi Rotich who is a clinical officer based in Baringo County, is among four suspects currently linked to the heinous crime. The other suspects include Jamlick Morogit, Kelvin Juma, and Felix Murambi Kodek.
They are being held at Langas Police Station as detectives work to uncover the motive and details behind the murder.
During a recent court hearing, lead investigating officer Felix Chirchir requested more time to hold the suspects, citing concerns that they might interfere with ongoing investigations if released on bail. He emphasized the gravity of the case before the court, urging the magistrate to deny bail to the suspects.
"I pray that you grant us 14 days to hold the suspects at Langas Police Station cells pending completion of investigations into the killing of the former international runner at his house in Elgon View estate three weeks ago," Chirchir said.
The presiding magistrate granted the request, allowing authorities to detain the four suspects until further progress is made in the investigation.
The case is scheduled to be mentioned on Thursday 7 November before the Eldoret High Court Deputy Registrar, where the police will provide an update on their findings and confirm if the suspects have undergone mental health assessments at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
Kandie competed in some of the world’s most prestigious marathons. In 1998 and 1999, he secured third-place finishes in the Berlin Marathon. The following year, he finished fourth in the Prague Marathon and third in the Amsterdam Marathon.
Kandie’s breakthrough came in 2001, when he won both the Kunsan Marathon and the San Sebastian Marathon, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier long-distance runner. That same year, he represented Kenya in the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, though he did not finish the marathon.
His most notable victory came in 2004, when he triumphed at the Vienna Marathon, clocking 2:08:35 despite adverse weather conditions. Kandie’s time shattered the previous course record held by Willy Cheruiyot.
