Tuwei passed away on Wednesday, 10 December, after battling a long and draining illness.

Kipruto, one of the country’s most consistent marathon performers in recent years, shared the heartbreaking news through his social media platforms.

The announcement drew an overwhelming wave of condolences from fellow athletes, officials, and fans across the athletics community.

In a video he posted, Kipruto is seen seated beside his father, who appears to be in a hospital bed wearing patient attire, signalling that the athlete had been by his side during his father’s final days.

The family has not released further details surrounding the death and has asked for privacy as they mourn.

Kipruto expressed his grief in an emotional tribute.

“Dad, you were the truest person I ever knew. You meant so much to me, and that’s why I did everything I could to help you get better. But God knows why things happen the way they do.

Today, I feel like I’ve lost everything. It breaks my heart to say goodbye, Dad. It’s so hard to write these words… RIP, Daddy,” part of the tribute read.

“With deep sadness, I share the news of my father’s passing after a long and difficult illness. Rest in peace, Daddy. You will forever be in my heart,” he announced.

Messages of commiserations trickled in from fellow athletes, including world 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet, who wrote: “Pole sana Amos.”

2022 New York City Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi added: “My condolences to you and your family.”

Kipruto has enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season. In April, he delivered a sensational run at the Haspa Marathon Hamburg, winning in a course-record 2:03:46, the first sub-2:04 time in the event’s history.

In October, he claimed second place at the Chicago Marathon in 2:03:54, finishing behind Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo.

Mozzart Sport sends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Kipruto during this difficult time.
