All seemed lost for Sharon Lokedi in her quest to represent Kenya after Athletics Kenya (AK) named the team to Paris Olympics but that has since changed.
An exit by former world record holder and reigning silver medalist Brigid Kosgei citing an injury gave Lokedi the chance she's been waiting for.
"I AM GOING TO PARIS!!! I am beyond excited to be heading to my first Olympics and my first team selection. This is definitely a dream come true! I never imagined my 4th marathon would be at the Olympics," Lokedi wrote on her socials after the announcement by AK.
The 30-year-old's exclusion from Team Kenya to the Summer Games had created a buzz on socials with many, albeit in hushed tones, arguing that she had been snubbed due to sponsorship politics in the team.
Now that she is part of the squad, Lokedi expressed excitement to be part of the star-studded squad that will be out to defend the title won by Peres Jepchirchir in Tokyo.
"Looking forward to representing Kenya and lining up with the fiercest crew," she continued.
Lokedi joins Jepchirchir who is out to defend her title from 2021 and debutant Hellen Obiri, a trio that has what it takes to sweep the podium.
Lokedi has a personal best of 2:23:23 from her debut and victory at the 2022 New York City Marathon. Most recently, she finished second in the NYRR Mini 10K in 31:04 in New York City on June 8.

Lokedi had initially been named as a reserve named despite an impressive runner-up finish in Boston and a third place finish at the New York City Marathon where she beat Kosgei.
Her Boston and New York City runs were also impressive because they came on hilly courses without any pacemakers, which simulates the championship style of the Olympics.
"A well earned spot Sharon, this was always your destiny, lets go girl! We can't wait to scream & cheer for you from Flagstaff! I am so proud of you, you gonna kick butt and I truly believe that you will medal...no pressure," fellow marathoner Alphine Taliamuk wrote after Lokedi shared the news on her socials four days ago.
