Kenya last won a medal in the distance for women in 2015.

Mary Moraa won Kenya's last medal as the World Athletics Championship came to a close for Team Kenya in Eugene, Oregon early Monday morning.

Moraa clocked a massive personal best 1:56.71 to finish behind the Olympic champion who is now the first American to win the world title in the distance Athing Mu and the Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson.

The stage was set for a super battle with all three Olympic medalist in the race.

It was Diribe Welteji who went ahead in to take the bell in pole position with Mu hanging on her shoulder, Moraa was fourth behind Hodgkinson as she took the bell in 57.46.

The Kenyan followed Hodgkinson to the front in at the 600m mark, the English athlete moving to Mu's shoulder. The American had moved to the front in the 500m mark

Moraa battled to maintain her place from Welteji who for a split second looked like she had eclipsed Moraa for the bronze on the hone straight but the Kenyan fought to reclaim her place for the huge PB.

Kenya last won a World Athletics 800m championship medal in the ladies category back in 2015 when former champion Eunice Sum clinched bronze in Beijing, China.

Moraa who elected not to double even after clocking qualifying times for the 400m carries the country's hopes of reclaiming the elusive gold.
