The money will be used to help prepare the athletes for the 2024 Olympic Games
Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala is delighted to be part of the seven athletes who benefited from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) Ksh19.32 million scholarship grant.
The 19 million boost that is set to be shared among the seven athletes is set to be used to aid athletes in preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The scholarship is set to benefit Omanyala, Nicholas Kipkorir (5,000m), Abel Kipsang (1,500m), Jacob Krop (5,000m), Charles Simotwo (1,500m), Beatrice Chebet (5,000m), and Margaret Chelimo (5,000m, 10,000m).
The athletes are set to receive Ksh115,000 monthly each to help them secure proper coaching, training facilities, travelling, accommodation and medical care.
Omanyala welcomed the scholarship which he noted would not only help him get into top condition for the Olympic Games but the upcoming World Championships in Oregon.
“I'm grateful for the scholarship I've received, it's an honour and a motivating factor as we head to Paris in two years time but before that we have two World Championships coming up and it will help me prepare for these games,” said Omanyala.
The scholarship comes after 11 sports persons benefited from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Solidarity scholarships worth Ksh.27 million back in May.
The 11 sports persons included Shooter Priscilla Wangui, Angela Okutoyi, Christine Ongare (boxing), Josette Njeri (triathlon), Nancy Akinyi (cycling), Sharon Wakoli (taekwondo), Alex Kiprotich, rower Samuel Muturi, swimmer Danilo Rosafio, wrestler Mahabila Mathayo and Brian Mutua (table tennis).
