His lifetime best time of 44.96 seconds qualified him for the global showpiece in Hungary.
Commonwealth Games 4x400m bronze medalist Boniface Mweresa is looking to lower his personal best (PB) time in 400m to stand a better chance of reaching the final at the World Athletics Championships due in August.
The Budapest-bound sprinter has already booked his slot at the global games courtesy of his 44.96 seconds for fourth place at the Commonwealth Games final in August last year.
In Birmingham during the Club Games, Mweresa started off in lane six and despite having the third slowest reaction time among the eight finalists, he gradually ate up into the lead at the back straight.
However, he did not have enough gas in the tank for a final dip as he failed to sustain a third-place spot at the final curl, narrowly being edged at the line by Jonathan Jones of Barbados who clocked 44.89secs.
This weekend, during the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athlete clocked a season best 45.73 seconds for fourth in a race won by world leader, Zambia’s Samukonga Muzala in a new meeting record of 44.25 seconds.
“I am not worried about this weekend’s times, it is an improvement from my first 4oom of the season where I clocked 47:44 in South Africa last month. I get back to training now with the 400m in mind.
Boniface Mweresa finished 4th in the men's 400m final with a personal best of 44:96.

Well done Mweresa 👏👏👏#TeamKenya #InspiringTheNation pic.twitter.com/GCryN7buA5
I have not been training for the 400m as I have been working on my speed with 100m and 200m training.
I am now making the transition to 400m training as I look to lower my time in the coming competitions. This is the toughest part of my training and I will need about six weeks to adjust and get my time close to my PB,” the sprinter explained.
While he is yet to land any diamond league invites, admittedly due to his time, he says that several continental tour silver and bronze hosts are angling for his presence for their events.
“I have an invite for a competition in the Czech Republic next month and my management is working on a few high-profile races that would help me get to my PB and lower.
I want to get my time to 44.6 seconds and faster before heading to the world championships as I believe that would be a competitive time,” he concluded.
