800m sensation Mary Moraa is set to kick off her 2025 season in style as she heads to Kingston, Jamaica, for the inaugural Grand Slam Track (GST) event, scheduled from Friday, 6 to Sunday, 8 April.
Moraa will be among the athletes competing in the event, which is the brainchild of four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson.
The GST aims to revolutionize athletics by providing more regular competition opportunities outside of the Olympic calendar, increasing the sport’s visibility and engagement.
The Olympic bronze medalist is set to fly out of the country on Monday night and is eager to impress in her first competition of the year.
Taking to her social media platforms ahead of her departure, Moraa expressed her enthusiasm and determination to make her fans proud.
“Today, I am checking out of the country to Jamaica for the first race of this season for the Grand Slam Track, and I am really ready.
Although, it is a new race to me, the combination of 800m and 1,500m. I know it is a tough race, but I am very well prepared," she said.
Moraa, who has primarily dominated the 800m event, will take on a new challenge as she competes in both the 800m and 1,500m.
She acknowledged that a tough challenge awaits, but remained optimistic. Her optimism stems from the intense training sessions she had with her coach.
“I have been training well with my coach. My body is well. But the combination of 800m and 1500m will do my best. See you at Jamaica, Grand Slam," she concluded.
The Grand Slam Track format is designed to be a thrilling competition, featuring four annual Slams between April and June.
Each event will include eight competitors across 12 groups, with four pre-selected "Racers" and four "Challengers" aiming to secure the best combined ranking after two races over the weekend to determine the Slam champion.
Moraa heads into the GST on the back of a spectacular 2024 season. She claimed a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games, secured victory at the Diamond League final in Brussels, and triumphed in multiple high-profile races.
Her achievements included winning the 600m at the ISTAF Berlin meet, where she shattered Caster Semenya’s world best, and claiming gold in the 400m at the African Games.
Additionally, she topped the podium at the Kip Keino Classic and clinched Diamond League wins in Doha and Lausanne while finishing second at the Prefontaine Classic.
In Kingston, Moraa will face stiff competition from top-tier athletes, including Jess Hull, Nikki Hiltz, Diribe Welteji, Nelly Chepchirchir, Heather MacLean, Natoya Goule-Toppin, and Susan Ejore.
