Although no exact retirement date has been confirmed, Kipchoge suggested that the London race might have been his last in the city he has long admired.

He competed in the 2025 London Marathon held on Sunday, 28 April, and finished sixth in 2:05:25.

For the Kaptagat-based runner, that was an emotional race, as it likely marked his last time competing in the beloved city.

He shared that he intends to run for one more year.

“I have nothing to prove. I am not competing with anybody at all, but myself. I am running with the values of sport. I am running with the values of humanity. That’s why I am running,” he told Olympics.com.

At 40, Kipchoge still relishes the thrill of competing against a new wave of marathon stars, including Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, 2024 Olympic gold medalist Tamirat Tola, and London Marathon winner Sebastian Sawe.

He, however, recognizes that the time to pass the baton is drawing near. Kipchoge is, however, not stepping away from the sport entirely.

“I think I will go around the world to run in big city marathons for a cause, for education and conservation. But above all, I am still having one more year,” he offered.

His next major outing is set for the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon on Sunday, 31 August. The event will be making its debut as part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series.

The two-time Olympic champion has one of the most storied marathon résumés in history. He is a two-time Olympic marathon gold medalist (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020), an 11-time Abbott World Marathon Majors winner (including four victories in London), and he formerly held the world record with his 2:01:09 run in Berlin.
