The multiple Olympic marathon champion opened up to Spanish outlet AS on what he does in his free time and plans for the near future

Eliud Kipchoge is arguably the greatest marathoner ever. He is a legend. He can dine and wine with the high and mighty in the society daily if he wants. He can train at high end facilities anywhere in the world if he so wishes. But he doesnt do all these.

Kipchoge, 37, prefers the simplicity of life at the Kaptagat Training Camp in Eldoret. He participates in the cleaning shifts, washes dishes and does all the other chores that need to be done by the athletes. His routine is simple, at 6AM in the morning the first session and in the afternoon the second, around 3PM.

I usually do about 200 kilometers a week. I try to never exhaust myself in training. I know and consider that my life is hard. In training there is a lot of pain and you suffer more than in competition, because when it comes to races, I know I am prepared,” reflects Kipchoge.

Eliud is very involved in the daily life of his colleagues and tries to instill in them a model of exemplary behavior. "I never drink alcohol," he opened up to AS.

“Eliud is a leader because of his way of being. You want to help others. He is not someone who waits for you to make a mistake and remains silent. He'll say, "Hey! Why are you doing that? He is a leader without an official title,” explains Patrick Sang Kipchoge's coach since he was a kid, who still sees that desire in the icon in the background. He keeps the fire in his eyes. And it has always been the same, he shows up to training and does it. No questions".

Kipchoge took the AS Crew to document his typical morning and afternoon runs in Kaptagat. The conditions are tough on the dirt roads. But this is what works for the great marathoner.

Kipchoge recently announced that he wants to run a marathon before the end of the year. There is speculation it could be Tokyo or Boston… It is unknown, but whatever he does, the focus will be there.

I would like to try the big marathons, the majors. I have three (London, Berlin and Chicago), I would need as many others to reach six (New York, Boston and Tokyo)”, he explains.

For Kipchoge, simplicity is key.

"The simple life that I lead makes me present at all times, if I didn't lead a life like that, my mind would not be prepared," concludes the Kenyan, who renounces luxuries, spending more time with his three children, supercars and ostentation . Everything to be the Spartan of athletics, the best in the world. It is Planet Kipchoge.
