
Kigen, Chirchir carry the day in Standard Chartered Marathon

The races started and concluded at Uhuru Gardens along Langata Road
Alphonce Kigen and Evaline Chirchir emerged as the winners of the 42-kilometer race of the 20th edition of the StanChart Nairobi Marathon on Sunday morning.
Kigen crossed the finish line in 2:10:18, eight seconds ahead of Moses Mwangi, who recorded 2:10:26.
He fell four seconds short of last year’s record of 2:10:22 set by Elias Kemboi.
Patrick Kipchirchir completed the podium in 2:11:59. Gideon Chepkonga claimed fourth place, with David Kipyego coming in fifth in 2:12:13 and 2:12:39, respectively.
The women’s category was even more competitive, with Chirchir establishing a decisive two-minute and 14-second lead over Martha Simiyu to record 2:24:31 and 2:26:45, respectively.
Aurelia Jerotich defied the chilly weather to finish as a runner-up in a time of 2:26:49.
The half marathon was won by Justus Kiprop, who ran in 1:02:39, ahead of Jackson Kipleting (1:02:43) and Asbel Kiplimo (1:03:02).
The women’s category was claimed by Jackline Chelal, who recorded 1:11:18.
Edith Jepchumba and Nancy Jepleting took second and third positions in 1:11:56 and 1:12:18, respectively.
Stanley Njihia was crowned the winner in the 10km category after running in 28:36, ahead of Shadrack Musyoka (29:02), and Evans Mayaka, who completed the course in 29:05.
Loice Chemnung carried the day in the women’s category after crossing the tape in 31:54, less than a second behind Gladys Chepkurui, who registered 32:13, ahead of third-placed Zenah Jerutoo, who recorded 33:25.
In the wheelchair race, Samuel Kuria beat the odds to win in 1:40:28.
Milton Hilamuya completed in second place after propelling in 1:46:28. Denis Ndungu completed the course in 1:49:00 for a third-place finish.
In the ladies’ category, Rahel Akoth came out victorious after setting a record for one minute and 58 seconds.
Her competitors came in more than an hour behind her, with Caroline Wanjira running in 2:24:52 and Eunice Atieno finishing at position three in 2:26:03.
Over 22,000 runners from over 90 countries were marked present for the annual marathon, an increase from last year, when 19,000 participants graced the event.
The event was divided into five categories, including 42km and corporate relay, 21km wheelchair, 21km, 10km, and 5km family races.
The 42km and corporate relay started at 6 a.m., followed by the 21km wheelchair race at 5:45 a.m., 21 km at 6:45 a.m., the 10km race at 8 a.m., and the 5 km family race at 9:30 a.m.
The races started and concluded at Uhuru Gardens along Langata Road.
The winners of the full marathon will receive Sh2m each for both the men's and women's categories.
