Kenyan 1500m runner dies in the United States of America

His last race came at the 2024 Yakima Mile in Washington

Kenya's Eliud Kipsang, a former NCAA record holder at 1500m, has died at 28 after suffering a cardiac arrest that had him in ICU for five days before passing on.

His record had him at number five on the NCAA Outdoor 1500m list.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of Eliud Kipsang’s passing. On Friday, 6 June, 2025, Eliud suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). 

Despite the tireless efforts of doctors and nurses, he tragically passed away on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025. His sudden departure has left his family, friends, and teammates devastated (sic)," his GoFundMe that was set up to raise money for funeral expenses states. 

In April 2022, Kipsang set the collegiate record in the men’s 1500m with a 3:33.74 at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

His record stood until this outdoor season when it was broken by Villanova’s Liam Murphy.

Kipsang’s best finish at an NCAA Championship was a runner-up finish in the 2021 NCAA Indoor mile behind Cole Hocker and then a fourth place showing at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor 1500m, where he finished behind Hocker, Yared Nuguse and Waleed Suliman.

In December 2023, he joined Tinman Elite in Boulder, Colorado but only raced once professionally for them. 

His last race came at the 2024 Yakima Mile in Washington.

His accolades at his alma mater, Alabama, include being named in the 2022 Cross Country first team, the All-American mile, 2021 Cross Country Runner of the Year, as well as the All-American 1,500 m and mile team.
