Kenya is readying to host the International Schools Sports Federation (ISF) World School Cross Country Championships scheduled for the Ngong Race Course in Nairobi from 10-15 May.

The global competition will bring together more than a century of countries.

The majority of participants will be young talented learners between the ages of 12 to 18.

Kenya received a nod to host the international championship after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ISF.

The MoU was signed on 28 November 2023 by the chairman of Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) chairman Kipchumba Maiyo and the President of ISF Laurent Petrynka at the Ministry of Education headquarters at Jogoo House.

Speaking on the preparations, the event’s Chief Executive Officer Barnaba Korir noted that they were leaving no stone unturned in making the event a resounding success. In preparation for the same, Korir noted that ISF President Petrynka would arrive in the country on Thursday.

“We are expecting the president on Thursday to inspect the progress of the preparations for the world event. The Local Organising Committee is committed to this event. We have to ensure everything is done as it should be,” Korir offered.

Korir who doubles up as the Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth and Development Director noted that over 1,000 athletes were expected, and they were hopeful that Kenyans would dominate.

“We are expecting over 1,000 athletes. Kenya is known for producing top-notch athletes and we want to raise our flag even higher," Korir revealed.

The event has received significant backing from the government through Cabinet Secretaries Ezekiel Machogu (Education) and Ababu Namwamba (Sports).

Last year’s 25th edition was held in Slovakia.

This year, Uganda will enter six teams of boys and girls U12, U15, and U17 categories.

Besides sporting activities, attendees will be treated to cultural exchange activities which will give them opportunities to exchange and learn about each participant and their countries.
