Kamworor looking to guide Kenya to World Cross Country team title

Two-time world cross country men's 10km champion Geoffrey Kamworor leads team Kenya to this year's edition of the biennial competition set for 18 February in Bathurst, Australia. 

The team left Kenya early Monday morning for Bathurst, arriving on 14 February with just three days of rest before competition. 

Beatrice Chebet eyeing senior cross-country title

Kamworor is joined in the senior men's team by former world half marathon champion Kibiwott Kandie, national trials winner Sebastian Kimaru, Olympians Nicholas Kimeli and Daniel Simiu and Emmanuel Kiprop. 

Ahead of the Saturday race, the world bronze medalist set to renew rivalry with reigning champion Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, says he is under no pressure. 

"This is the fifth time I am competing in the world cross country championships so I know what to expect and how to handle the different challenges on the course. 

I went to Denmark in 2019 as the defending champion but could only manage third place due to the course we encountered there. We had not prepared for that. 

We have been keen to find out how the course looks this time and made the efforts to prepare for such. We are ready and I remain hopeful of reclaiming the title," Kamworor said ahead of the team's departure for Australia. 

Kamworor is the senior most athlete in the kenyan men's team and has newbies to guide as the country hopes to win more titles than they did in 2019 where only Hellen Obiri and Beatrice Chebet managed to win the women's senior and juice races. 

"We have tactics we will use to win the team title that we have missed out on since 2011 as well. Team work will be key. Four of the six get to score so it is important to stick to our tactics," Kamworor said.
