
Josephat Kiprotich and Edith Chepchuma bag AK Mountain running titles

The event will be used to select some of the athletes that will represent Kenya at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships that will take place in Thailand in November
Josephat Kiprotich and Edith Chepchuma were the winners of the 2nd edition of the Athletics Kenya Mountain running championships that was held on Sunday 2 January in Tinderet, Nandi County.
Kiprotich took the top honors in 10km senior men’s when he cut the tape in 47:47 and was followed closely by Frederick Domongole who came home in second in 47:51 with Hillary Maiyo closing the first three podium finishes in 47:71.
In the 10km senior women category, Jepchumba ran away with the title in one of the most difficult course she has ever faced as she cut the tape in 61.06 ahead of Zenah Jeptoo who crossed second in 61:12 and Monica Jeruto taking the third spot in 62.02.
Amos Kipkurui won the 8km junior men in 28:06 followed by Nicholas Kiprop (28:30) and Bernard Kipchirchir (29:08) while Valentine Jebet was the 6km champion in 32:12 followed by Eileen Chepkoech (32:27) and Faith Chepchirchir (35:49).
The race which was the second edition of Athletics Kenya (AK) National Mountain Running Championships was initially planned for November 28 last year but was moved to January 2 due to changes in the World Mountain Running calendar.
With the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand in November this year, officials from the federation are expected to use the event to pin down some of the very best athletes who will represent Team Kenya at the international event.
In the 2021 season, Kenyans dominated the less familiar athletic discipline the country is used to as Joyce Muthoni Njeru was crowned the overall women’s World Mountain Racing Association (WMRA) World Cup champion.

In the men’s category, Geoffrey Gikuni Ndungu managed to take third place in the overall World Cup that was won by Italy's Henri Aymonod with Hungary's Sandor Szabo finishing second overall.
