Large crowds of supporters and spectators braved the foggy conditions and low light to witness this historic occasion

The second edition of the Iten International Marathon that was held on Sunday was nothing short of spectacular as athletes defied all the odds to make the event a memorable one.

Luke Kiprop and Naomi Chepkorir defied the energy-snapping temperatures in the 42km race on a high-altitude course from Chororget to Iten to finish at 2:08:43 and 2:28:33 in the festive event.

However, the race was not without its fair share of challenges as the marathon began under a cloak of immense fog and mist delaying the kick-off.

Large crowds of supporters and spectators braved the foggy conditions and low light to witness this historic occasion. Their enthusiasm was evident as they lined the streets, waving flags and supporting their favorite athletes.

One of the standout features of the marathon was the electrifying performance of the live band that entertained the spectators and guests. The rhythmic beats and soul-stirring melodies added an extra layer of excitement to the event, creating a joyous atmosphere that spread throughout the small town.

The event was graced by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Transport Kipchumba Murkomen, and CS Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Ababu Namwamba. Mr Murkomen completed the 5km run in 28 minutes, a two-minute improvement from his record at the Mozzart Bet Chemususu Dam Half marathon on Saturday.

Following the exciting marathon, various political figures addressed the residents, all seizing the opportunity to plead with CS Namwamba to hasten the completion of the long-stalled Kamarinya Stadium.

While the town produces athletes, who can break world records, it struggles to give them a stadium that is worthy of their limitless skill. For six long years, the Kamarinya Stadium project has remained an unfinished symphony of dashed hopes. The renovation works started in 2017, but to date, the stadium is still far from completion, raising more questions than answers.

On his side, the CS noted that his ministry would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the completion of the same. He further promised that the ministry would join hands with the devolved unit to support the third edition of the marathon.

In the men's category, Charles Kimeli and Edwin Yator came in second and third by clocking 2:14:19 and 2:14:46 respectively while Lina Kaino (2:34:27) settled for second position while Caroline Kimosop completed the podium in 2:36:36 in the ladies' category.
