His timely comeback gives Kenyans hope for gold in 1500m where he will partner Reynolds Cheruiyot and Brian Komen who is likely to replace Daniel Munguti who missed out on qualifying time

The last time Timothy Cheruiyot, who seems to have put his injury woes behind him, raced Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the latter employed interesting tactics for the win, diving for the finish.

The duo renews rivalry on Friday 12 July at the Monaco Diamond League, a precursor of the Paris Olympics where the two are expected to lock horns again.

Their last race was the Oslo Diamond League on May 30 where Ingebrigtsen claimed victory in 3:29.74.

In this race, pacing lights were set for a 3:29.00 finish, and the pacers hit 800 meters in 1:51.45, but Ingebrigtsen leading the chase pack, had allowed a gap to form and passed in 1:52.5.

Once the pacers stepped off, Ingebrigtsen took control of the race, with Cheruiyot following closely.

The Kenyan made a move for the lead with 200 meters to go, but was held off by Ingebrigtsen.

However, in the final 50 meters, Cheruiyot started to come back on forcing Ingebrigtsen to dive across the line to try to hold on to the win.

Watching it live, it was too close to call but in the end, Jakob was given the win with Cheruiyot a mere 0.03 seconds behind in 3:29.77.

In addition to this rivalry, Cheruiyot who carries Kenya’s hopes for gold also goes up against compatriot, African champion Brian Komen, winner of the Doha Diamond League in 3:32.43.

In bagging his first Diamond League victory, Komen triumphed over the former world champion Cheruiyot.

The duo will also have 25-year-old Yared Nuguse to contend with. In late May, Nuguse came third in the historic 2024 Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic, in a season's best time of 3:46.22, behind Ingebrigtsen (3:45.60) and Josh Kerr (3:45.34).

Given the remarkable depth of the field, which also had 2022 world champion, Jake Wightman, among others, this race was billed as the "Mile of the Century".

On June 24, at the 2024 Olympic trials, Nuguse took second to Cole Hocker in a time of 3:30.86 to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
