In 2022, three-time 20km African walking race champion Samuel Gathimba became a world medalist.
The race walker anchored the Kenyan team as they made their debut at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Muscat, withstanding stiff competition to finish third and deliver the country's first-ever medal at the event.
Gathimba is expected to represent Team Kenya on the world stage in this year’s championship set to be held in Antalya on 21 April.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Gathimba, who says his preparation is going well, has his eyes set on another podium, looking to ultimately win the title when he lines up for the global championship.
In 2022, he finished behind Japanese duo of Toshikazu Yamanishi and Koki Ikeda, making history as the first Kenyan to medal at the championship.
“The team is yet to be named but I have put in the work, shuffling between my training base in Nyeri and the high-altitude training camp in Nyahururu and I feel ready. Winning the title is my target,” he offered.
Asked whether his most recent performance at the just-concluded 13th African Games, where he finished second in 1:28:06 behind Ethiopian Misganaw Wakuma, had him worried, the 2019 champion who was out to defend his title was unmoved.
“An officiating mishap is to blame for my loss during the Africa Games. I am not worried. I know I am in great form. In the few days left, I will be sharpening my speed work as I have my endurance worked on. It will a tough battle but one I am prepared for,” he explained.
Five events will be held in the Turkish city, including the relay which involves teams of one male and one female athlete, who will complete the marathon distance in four legs of approximately equal distance.
The first 22 teams to finish in Antalya will automatically qualify for the marathon race walk mixed relay at the Olympic Games in Paris. Up to five of those first 22 teams can be a second team from the same country.
