Former 1500m world champion Timothy Cheruiyot won the Los Angeles Grand Prix

Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo clocked 28.28 to set the new course record at the 2023 Okpekpe 10km International road race on Saturday 27 May.

Another Kenyan, Brian Kwemoi, was second in 28.40, while last year’s winner Ethiopian Yasin Hagi returned in 29:34 to place third.

The women’s race produced a new champion and new course record as well as Carolina Kipkirui won in 32:38, while Kenya’s Ludwina Chepngetich (32:53) and Ethiopia’s Betukan Welder (32:58) emerged second and third respectively.

I am happy to win here, it was a different but difficult race for me having to challenge a former champion. I am also happy to win with a new course record which was surprising to me on a wet day,” an elated Ebenyo said after his triumph.

Winners Ebenyo and Kipkirui received $20,000 each.

Race officials attributed the new course records in the male and female events to new innovations that were introduced to enhance efficiency through effective communication at various stages of the race.

Meanwhile, the 2019 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot clinched top honours in the LA Grand Prix, after crossing the line ahead of the rest.

Cheruiyot clocked a world lead time of 3:31.47 ahead of youngster Reynold Cheruiyot who finished second in 3:32.01.

Reynold, has had a seamless transition to the senior category if his performance in the races he has participated is anything to go.

Former world U20 champion Vincent Keter, finished fifth in 3:33.16.
