Commonwealth Games: First batch of Team Kenya athletes set to jet off tomorrow

The Games’ Chef de Mission, John Ogolla and the Chief Executive Officer, Humphrey Kayange departed to Birmingham last weekend

The first contingent of the Kenyan team set to represent the country in the XXII edition of the Commonwealth Games is set to fly out on Friday this week ahead of the showpiece set for 28th July to 8th August 2022.

With full funding support from the government of the Games, Sports Cabinet Secretary Dr. Amb. Amina Mohamed has seen the team is well managed and facilitated.

The same was the message directed to the team after a flag off from H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta at statehouse: “Go Out and Shine”, noting that the competition is very significant as the country will be gearing towards election.

The Games’ Chef de Mission, John Ogolla and the Chief Executive Officer, Humphrey Kayange departed to Birmingham last weekend to receive the team when they arrive later in the week.

Athletes drawn from; Athletics, boxing, Squash, Hockey, Badminton, Cycling, Swimming, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Lawn Bowls and Para-cycling are set to hit the runaway on Friday.

The Management has ensured all details towards the Games are in place, including Covid-19 management compliance, with PCR tests to be carried out starting Wednesday 20, 2022 at the Residential Camp in Kasarani for teams traveling on Friday.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya Secretary General Francis Mutuku said they had taken care of the travelling logistics including securing the necessary documents in good time.

We are ready for Birmingham as we ensured all athletes have travel documents such as passports and Visas to the UK early enough and that their concentration is purely set on performance and excellence.” he said

“A checklist has been issued to all team managers to ensure they have everything the team requires days before departure. We are happy to report that all is on course. The Official Nike Kit will be issued on Thursday, July 21 and we invite the media to also come and cover the event.” he added

Some of the matters on the checklist include; Visa, tickets, PRC test and Covid-vaccination, anti-doping compliance among others.

Most of the athletics team in Oregon for the World Championships will also be travelling to Birmingham for the Games. They will also start departing during the week.
