Kenya named a strong squad for the two championships looking to clinch the overall titles.

Pamela Kosgei, keen to chart her own path in her athletics career, has promised to deliver another medal for Kenya when she lines up for the national team at the Under-18 and Under-20 Junior championships set for 29 April to 3 May in Lusaka, Zambia.

The 18-year-old, a younger sister to world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, is the only representative in the women’s Under-20 3000m steeplechase, being the only one that made the qualification time during the trial held on the weekend.

“I want to get a medal n Zambia but more importantly, I want to improve on my time. I do not know what the weather will be like in Zambia so I cannot predict what will happen, but I would very much like to deep under the 9:43.30 that I posted during the trial,” she said after clinching her ticket to Lusaka.

Having competed at last year’s World Athletics Under-20 championships in Cali, Colombia finishing in fifth place after tripping on one of the hurdles, Kosgei made her second chance to represent the country count.

The chance came in February where she brought home bronze from the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, timing 21:01 to clinch in the junior women’s category.

“That was a good build up to the season. Preparing for cross country calls for a lot of loading and endurance and that set the rest of my season off to a good start.

Making the transition to train for track events was a bit difficult at the beginning but that is expected as I build on speed. In the remaining days before the competition in Zambia, I will be working on getting better with my speed,” she added.
