The race is set for 12 July and Kenya will look to lower the 38.82 seconds time set at the National Championships on 22 June that places them 21st

Africa 4x100m relay men’s champions, Kenya are chasing qualification to the World Championships before the window closes on 30 July.

Led by Commonwealth Games and African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala who already has his ticket for the 100m race in Budapest, the team of five left he country on Monday 10 July night for Belgium where they intend to fight for their place on the world stage.

Under coach Stephen Mwaniki, the team also has Hesbon Ochieng, Steve Onyango, Samuel Chege and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in the 4x400m relay Boniface Mweresa who has already bagged his 400m ticket to Budapest.

The team will compete at the International Athletics Meeting of the Province of Liege, a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze label race, with the hope of lowering their time and bettering their ranking.

Kenya’s best time of 38.26 seconds achieved in Botswana on 29 April puts the team in 12th place in the best ranked teams that will fill the eight remaining places. However, with suspended Samuel Imeta having been part of the squad, the time is likely not to stand. The national championship time is likely to be used instead

The first eight placed teams at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Canada, USA, Great Britain, Jamaica, Ghana, South Africa, Brazil and France have their tickets.

“I am confident the team will achieve that time because they are smoking hot. They are focused and ready to do the job for the country,” Mwaniki told Daily Nation adding that Omanyala’s influence and inspiration goes a long way.
