Both Kenyans finished second in their Heats

Jacob Krop recovered from a fall in the men 3000m heats to qualify for Sunday’s final in the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

Krop finished second in 7:46.43 behind Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma who ran 7:46:21. The highlight of the race was basically when Krop was tripped and had a bad fall, but managed to get up and finish second.

Daniel Simiu, who was in was in Heat 3, was squeezed in lane 1, but at one point managed to get out of the group and get to place number 2 after 800m. At 1500m he was in the lead, but the group was right behind him. He made it at the top almost until the end, when UK’s Marc Scott went past him to finish first, while Simiu finished second, but still qualified.

"I was tripped and had a bad fall, bruising my knee, but I'm happy to have made it among the automatic qualifiers and looking forward to recovering well before the final. There was a lot of pushing and shoving and I don't even know what happened leading to my fall,” said Krop after the race.

Knowing that they will face a tough competition against the Ethiopians in the finals, Simiu said:

“This is my fast championship indoors. I’m going into the finals. I’ll do better than this. I’m glad that my teammate is also into the finals. We’ll go to the drawing board with our coach. We are hoping for a good result."

The 3000m final is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon from 2:10 PM EAT.
