For many of the sport’s biggest stars, the meeting will be the first step on the road to the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich on Wednesday, 27 and Thursday, 28 August, and the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.
The Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion will line up in the 5000m in a loaded field, stepping on the track for the distance for the first time since her 2024 Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium, where she timed 14:09.82.
Chebet, the 10000m World Record holder, has been pitted against 13 Ethiopians, among them world 5000m record holder Gudaf Tsegay. The two renew their rivalry on track for the first time this year, with attention on the duo despite the loaded field.
When Chebet set her 10000m world record of 28:54.14, Tsegay finished second in 29:05.92 in a race that the latter was chasing the record. The Kenyan broke the sub-29-minute barrier for the first time in history and credited Tsegay's fast pace for pushing her to the record.
As they head to the race, Tsegay, the world record holder in the event with a 14:00.21 Personal Best (PB) set in 2023, faces the World Record holder in the 5km mixed race, where Chebet became the first woman to dip under 14 minutes, in the distance on any surface clocking 13:54, shattering Agnes Ngetich’s world 5km record by 19 seconds.
Chebet will be looking to continue her stellar show after two career-shaping seasons.
After winning a double at the Paris Summer Games, Chebet has expressed her intention to compete in both the 5000m and 10,000m events at the World Championships in Tokyo in 2025.
