The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, has confirmed that Athletics Kenya (AK) will hold its elections in 2025.

AK last held general elections in 2015, when the current president, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, took office.

Though new elections were scheduled for 2017, a court order halted the process after ten applicants contested it.

Speaking on Thursday at the launch of the 2024 Chemususu Dam Half Marathon, sponsored by gaming firm Mozzart Bet, Murkomen emphasized the need for accountability and good governance in all Kenyan federations.

"We have Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections coming up, we will have AK elections next year, and several other federations will also hold theirs.

Going forward, the rules must be followed, accountability must be achieved, and others must be given the chance to contribute to the country,” said Murkomen.

Murkomen has been a strong advocate for smooth transitions in sports federations, encouraging leadership changes.

Each of us must remember that this is a stage; you come, do what you need to do, then give way for someone else to try,” he emphasized.

AK was set to hold elections this year, but a ruling by Lawrence Mugambi determined that the current officials are not eligible for re-election and should vacate office immediately.

The judge also directed AK to amend its 2016 constitution within 90 days, following public consultation with key stakeholders, and then hold elections.

The current officials appealed the decision, and a stay order was issued.

A panel of three judges—Patrick Kiage, Lydia Achode, and Abida Ali-Aroni—was formed to hear and resolve the case, which is now ongoing at the Court of Appeal.
