Speaking in an interview with KBC Sport, Korir confirmed that AK is working closely with government officials, and other key stakeholders, to expedite the process ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled to take place from August 2 to 30 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

We got assurance that the glue, which was missing at that time, is already there. There’s confirmation that by the end of this month, we will have it, and installation will begin immediately after,” Korir stated.

He further noted that the groundwork has already been prepared, with all technical hitches well addressed.

We have discussed with senior government officials that once the material arrives, the tartan track can be laid down before CHAN, hopefully by late June or early July. Everything else is ready,” he added.

The update comes as AK prepares to host national trials for the World Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for August 1–2.

Korir’s assurance offers a much-needed boost for the athletics fraternity.

The sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, initially slated for Nyayo Stadium, had to be moved to Ulinzi Sports Complex after delays in track installation.

Ulinzi was then upgraded to meet World Athletics standards, ensuring the meet could go ahead.

Korir, who also serves as the Kip Keino Classic meet director, said that the federation has been closely monitoring the project’s progress.

“We recently held a meeting to follow up on the development. The only thing that had been delaying us was a special kind of glue needed to lay the track,” he said.

He lauded the government’s role in accelerating the project, adding that the responsibility now lies with the contractor to deliver within the expected timeframe.

The government has done a fantastic job in providing the necessary resources. What remains now is for the contractor to complete the installation,” Korir affirmed.
