
AK track and field meets get underway in Mumias

Seven events have been scheduled for between January and April across the country.
Athletics Kenya’s (AK) cross-country series ended on the weekend after the national championship held at Prisons College-Ruiru and attention now moves to the track and field.
The federation has released a seven-part calendar that guns off this weekend on 27 and 28 January at Mumias Sports complex with sprints, middle distance, and field events build up competition.

“The meet which was set to be held in Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega will now be held at the at The Mumias Sports Complex Stadium,” AK wrote in their communique.
Athletes are expected to compete in various distances for both men and women that include 100m, 100m/110m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m, 4x400m, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.
Action in Mumias will be followed closely by the first weekend meeting set for 10 to 11 February at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, paving way for the second meet at Nyayo Stadium on 24 and 25 January.

In March, athletes head to Nyeri at the Ruringu Stadium for the third leg on 10 and 11. For the first time in ten years, AK will pitch tent in Mombasa, at Mbaraki Stadium for the fourth leg on 31 March and 1 April.
Two weeks later action heads to Kisii, at Gusii Stadium, for the fifth round on 14 and 15 April. Nyayo will then conclude the meets on 28 and 29 April.
Athletes will use the meets as part of their preparations for the many upcoming international events including the World Athletics Championships set for Saturday, 19 August to Sunday 27 August in Budapest Hungary.
