AK set new dates for National championship

Reading Time: 2min | Sun. 24.04.22. | 16:51

Africa Senior Athletics Championship is set for 8 to 12 June in Mauritius.

Kenyan athletes will lock horns at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani from Tuesday 26 April in search of tickets to the Senior African Athletics Championships set for Mauritius in June.

The national championship that serves as the qualifiers to the continental event has been brought forward, having previously been set to begin on Thursday.

"The National Athletics championships has been brought forward to Tuesday 26th April and will run until Thursday 28th at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The three day event which had initially been planned for April 28-30 will see AK pick Team Kenya for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships programmed for June 8 to 12 in Mauritius. Institutional and County teams will be reporting in Nairobi tomorrow.

We apologize for inconveniences arising as a result of the impromptu changes," announced Athletics Kenya's (AK) Barnaba Korir.

The national championship follows a series of events that got the season off including the AK track and field meetings held in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mumias that paved way to the Kenya Prisons, Kenya Police and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) meets. The regions also held their events.

The national championship, unlike other trials to upcoming international athletics assignments, is open to all.

However, for any of the athletes to make Team Kenya, the selection criteria dictates that they must have attained the entry standards set by CAA and have met all the antidoping requirements set by AK and CAA.

The first 2 athletes across the line during the trials will automatically be selected. The third athlete will be selected by a panel of selectors.

While releasing their calendars for trials to upcoming international events, AK were categorical that none of the athletes will be handed tickets to any of the championship if they do not participate in the trials.
