The 24-year-old took 33 seconds off the previous world record set by fellow Kenyan Agnes Tirop in September 2021 in the same competition

And finally, she did it!

Kenyan long-distance runner Agnes Jebet Ngetich on Saturday, 26 April, put behind her narrow miss of 2024 to break the women 's-only 10 km world record in a dominant display at the Adizero: Road to Records race in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Jebet, who a year ago missed out on the world record by two seconds, clocked an astonishing 29:27 to shatter the late Agnes Tirop’s record of 30:01 set in September 2021, defending her title, and setting new grounds in women's road running.

The 24-year-old took little time in asserting her dominance in the race, breaking away from the lead group after just five minutes, to go on her way to beating the clock by over 30 minutes (33 minutes).

The record added to Jebet’s already-glowing list of achievements, which also includes a mixed-gender 10km road world record, set on 14 January 2024 in Valencia.

On her new achievement, Jebet, who ran straight to the legendary Haile Gebrselassie at the finish line said: “I am so excited. Don’t know what to say.

“I did not expect it since last year, when I ended up missing by two seconds. Today I was like let me try and maybe I can make it. So proud of myself. It’s unbelievable.”

Joining the Kenyan on the podium was the Ethiopian duo of Fentaye Belayneh and Senayet Getachew, who timed 30:30 and 30:31 respectively.

Kenyan Faith Cherono came home seventh, clocking 31:44.

In a dramatic men’s race, there was a three-way tie at the front, with all of Birhanu Balew (Ethiopia), Gemechu Dida (Ethiopia) and Burundi’s Rodrigue Kwizera timing a leading time of 26:54.

Nicholas Kimeli, the top-Kenyan finisher in the elite race, finished a further two-seconds behind in fourth place.

Elsewhere in the one mile, Kenya’s duo of Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Nelly Chepchirchir were on top of their game, winning their races in times of 3:51 and 4:23 respectively.
