2024 Nairobi City Marathon draws global competitors with millions up for grab

A lucrative prize pool of Ksh60 million is up for grabs for competitors in the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, September 8, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

In the full marathon (42km), winners will receive Ksh3.5 million. The winners of the half marathon (21km) will take home Ksh150,000, while the winners of the 10km expressway run will pocket Ksh100,000.

The marathon is one of the most lucrative events in Kenya, offering the highest prize money for top finishers, likely attracting marathoners from various nations.

Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei disclosed that dozens of foreign runners from 40 different countries will participate in the Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday.

Athletes from India, Belgium, Russia, and Uganda are among the marathoners headlining the field with the prize money at stake.

We already have a significant number of foreigners, including 150 from China, 75 from the United Kingdom, 56 from the United States, and several others from Tanzania."

"We also have participants from France, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Serbia, Australia, Belgium, Finland, Ghana, Switzerland, Burundi, the Czech Republic, Namibia, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Israel, Colombia, Libya, Norway, India, Russia, and Thailand."

"The marathon is becoming very popular, and we welcome all participants from 40 different countries. The expressway team has provided substantial support,” Tuwei said during the event’s press briefing.
